In Foundation Stage we love learning through our children's interests and play. So if you child comes home very tired and a little but scruffy this just means we have been learning lots through lots of different ways!
Autumn 1-All about me!
In the first term our learning is themed around the children themselves. The children will learn all about themselves and the people who are important to them. We learn through lots of play, being imaginative and LOTS of talking! In this term we will be reading lots of stories about feelings and emotions and how we can recognise them and also deal with our big feelings. We also look at our immediate environment and how it differs from other environments. We talk a lot about seasons and changes of Autumn. Where we live ie/City. What is around us. Homes and houses and some farmland.
Autumn 2- Seasons and celebrations!
In this term we learn all about different types of celebrations such as Bonfire Night, Diwali and Christmas. In this topic we introduce different religions and how their celebrations differ from Christianity. We have fun making our firework pictures, Rangoli patterns using coloured rice and Diva lamps. We celebrate the seasons by going on an Autumn walk and visiting the church to learn about the story of the first Christmas. We conclude this topic with our beautiful and hard worked on Christmas Nativity!!
Spring Term 1- Animals in our World!
In this topic we look at different animals in our world and the environments they live in. This topic is geography based and we learn all about different environments and places around the world, along with what lives there. We learn about polar animals and the cold environment they live in and farm animals and the environment they live in and how it differs. During this topic we do our first out of school visit to Graves park farm.
Additionally, we learn about animals from elsewhere in the world including china. The children read the story of The Great Race. They learn all about Chinese New Year and how it is celebrated around the world. We hope to conclude this topic by doing some Chinese crafts and Chinese food tasting!
Spring Term 2-
Real-Life Superheroes!!
In this topic we learn about real life superheroes such as Doctors, nurses, firefighters, police officers etc. The children learn all about the important jobs people do in the community and why everyone's job is important. Children will talk about and write about what they want to be when they grow up and which real life superhero they want to be. We will helicopter writing with a teacher to make up imaginative stories about what Nell the detective dog might find on her adventures. During this topic we do a lot of history around jobs in the present compared to what they were like in the past. We hope to conclude this topic with a visit from a real life superhero and finishing in our last week talking about fiction superheroes such as Supertato and iron man.
Summer Term 1- I'm Alive (Planting and Growing)
In this topic we look at how plants grow and why it is important to grow and look after plants. The children have a chance to plant their own seeds and observe them grow. This topic is usually heavily science based and we like to do lots of practical experiments. We will be looking at books such as jack and the beanstalk, jaspers beanstalk and The enormous turnip. We will have frequent walks up to our school garden to observe plants growing and changing and observe the wildlife. We will also have a go at pond dipping in our school pond. In this term we speak a lot about the season 'spring' and why our plants grow better in the spring.
Summer Term 2- Pirates and the seaside.
In this topic we learn about pirates and read the book pirates love underpants. We also learn all about the seaside and sea life. We talk about seaside visits in the past compared to now and learn about different animals that live in the sea. We particularly enjoy having our sports day and family picnic so get your picnic baskets at the ready and get ready to cheer on the children as they take part in lots of sports day games. Our favourite part of the term is our end of year seaside day where the children get to bring their beach attire and a bucket and spade and spend the day at Norton Free by the Sea. We rent the children an ice-cream van, get our the sandpits and paddling pools and have seaside games for the children to enjoy!!
