Welcome to Year 6 - 2025!

This Year, the Year 6 Team includes Mr Neilson-Wade, Mrs Hall and Mr French.

Mr Neilson-Wade will be teaching in class all day on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Wednesday morning. Mr French will teach the class on Wednesday afternoons. 

Mrs Hall will be in class every morning supporting the children's learning in reading, writing and maths. 

Our PE lessons are on Monday and Thursday. Please ensure that you arrive in your PE Kit, which can include black shorts, tracksuit bottoms, white t-shirt, a zip up hoody or jacket and trainers. Do not wear football shirts as this is not part of our PE kit.

Homework

Homework will be put on the Year 6 class page of Google Classrooms every Friday afternoon. Homework will always be linked to learning which we have been completing in school. A date for completion will be attached to the activity.

In Year 6, our curriculum is designed to deepen pupils’ understanding of the world, develop critical thinking, and prepare them for secondary school. Through a range of engaging topics, children will build knowledge, make connections across subjects, and reflect on how learning links to the wider world.

History – World War II - Autumn 1&2

Learning about World War II helps children understand how historical events are interconnected and the impact they have on people’s lives.

During this topic, pupils will:

• Explore the causes of the war and the countries involved
• Learn about key events such as the Blitz and evacuation
• Study what life was like for children during wartime Britain
• Understand the role of propaganda and how information was shared
• Reflect on the consequences of war and the importance of peace

This topic encourages children to think critically about justice, conflict, and the importance of working together to prevent future wars.

Geography – Biomes - Spring 1 

Through the study of biomes, children learn how climate and geography affect living things across the world.

Pupils will:

• Identify and locate different biomes (e.g. rainforest, desert, tundra)
• Explore how animals and plants adapt to survive in extreme conditions
• Understand how humans live in and use these environments
• Investigate environmental issues such as deforestation and climate change
• Consider how human actions impact ecosystems

This topic helps children develop an understanding of global environmental challenges and their role in protecting the planet.

Geography – Chile - Spring 2 

Our study of Chile allows children to explore a contrasting country in depth.

Pupils will:

• Locate Chile on a map and understand its physical features (mountains, volcanoes, coastline)
• Explore the climate and how it varies across the country
• Learn about Chilean culture, traditions, and daily life
• Compare life in Chile to life in the UK
• Understand how people adapt to natural challenges such as earthquakes

This topic develops pupils’ global awareness and appreciation of diversity.

History – The Ancient Maya - Summer 1 

By studying the Ancient Maya, children gain insight into an advanced civilisation from the past.

Pupils will:

• Locate the Maya civilisation in time and place
• Learn about Maya cities, society, and social structure
• Explore their achievements, including writing, mathematics, and astronomy
• Understand their religious beliefs and daily life
• Investigate reasons for the decline of the civilisation

This topic encourages curiosity about how past societies lived and how they influence the world today.

Transition to Secondary School - Summer 2 

Preparing for secondary school is an important part of Year 6.

During the year, pupils will:

• Develop independence in their learning and organisation
• Build resilience and confidence when facing new challenges
• Take part in discussions and activities about change and transition
• Learn strategies to manage worries and expectations
• Have opportunities to reflect on their achievements and set goals

We aim to ensure all children feel confident, prepared, and excited for the next stage of their education.
